Song for the Masks of Remembrance
As I crave and hanker my mind comes undone,
My flesh, my desires, my claim to be one.
Oh Notion of notions, I fight and I cling;
devoid of a purpose, convinced to be king.
My life to remember, my fears to outrun.
My eyes have seen entropy’s call to the cold,
My ears often deaf to the voices of old,
My nose lost the fragrance I knew to be mine,
My mouth strayed from flavors and musings benign.
My battle is lost now, my story’s been told.
I come to you, pathless, my conscious unwound:
my life in a flavor, an image, a sound.
Identity woven, my mind in a strand,
I’ll live what they live, I’ll stand where they stand,
kept whole by the duty to which I’ll be bound.
These eyes to your Cosmos, this nose to their flask,
These ears to remember the questions they ask,
This mind in remembrance of conscious and thoughts,
This body, recalling their lives till it rots.
Where once was a man, remains nought but a Mask.
As I crave no more, with my brethren as one;
Remembering for many, remembered by none;
Oh Notion of notions, ’tis notion I bring.
As light warms no longer, the faceless shall sing:
We witnessed, we heard. Now the Masks’ work is done.
